How to Reduce JPG File Size
For a JPG that is too large, check its dimensions, resize if it is oversized, and then compress at a moderate quality setting.
Step 1: Check what is actually wrong
Before changing an image, identify the requirement. A website may care about file size in MB, pixel dimensions, supported formats, or several of these at once. Use the Image Size Checker when you are not sure.
Step 2: Apply the right change
If the image has too many pixels, use the recommended first tool. If the dimensions are already right but the file is too heavy, use the next step. Avoid making multiple aggressive changes when one targeted change solves the problem.
Step 3: Verify the output
Check the new file size, dimensions and visual quality. Open the result at the size people will actually see it. For important images, keep the original so you can create a different delivery version later.
Common mistakes
- Renaming a file extension instead of actually converting the image.
- Reducing quality aggressively before checking whether the dimensions are unnecessarily large.
- Overwriting the only copy of the original image.
- Optimizing for a search-engine keyword instead of the actual upload or display requirement.
